Kansas City Boys Choir and Kansas City Girls Choir at John Brown statue in Quindaro, KS

The Kansas City Boys Choir and Kansas City Girls Choir perform the spiritual "Steal Away" at the foot of the John Brown statue, which is the last remnant of Western University, the first historic black college west of the Mississippi. During the 1920s, the school had a reputation for having one of the finest music departments for rising black musical artists. The school's Jackson Jubilee Singers toured nationally singing spirituals, bringing fame to the small school founded by the African Methodist Episcopal church in 1881.
